Chapter 8

Worth the Risk

Days passed like normal summer days as summer vacation was coming to a close. I hung out with Ian and Isabel here and there as the inevitable, gloomy fate of school approached. But my sunshine to the situation was that Max and I had begun talking again. Every night we would video call for hours until it was almost four in the morning and we were both delirious. I was over the moon, I couldn't be more thankful, it was just like before, we were just two pals having a good time.

Incoming video call: Max Lawrence I swiped on the screen to answer.

"Hello!" Max's nose was pressed on the screen.

"Max stop!" I laughed.

He backed up showing his whole face.

"What's going on tonight? Schools starting soon huh?"

"Ya, you're so lucky Max! You don't have to go back to that prison."

"Okay, imagine you on tour with me! Your face is so beautiful, it’s perfect for the stage or spotlight!" There go the butterflies.

“Hah, I have no interest in that.”

I kept telling myself that getting feelings for my friends was detrimental to our relationships and they had to stop. So I got over Ian as quickly as it had started. I promised myself to cut off feelings for not just Ian but also for Max. But, there was something that kept making him creep back into my heart, no matter how hard I tried I couldn't shake the feelings away. I thought that time had healed me, and time had made me forget. But, I swear it feels as if I like him more now. You really don't get to decide how you're going to feel do you?

We laughed for hours over the phone. Even though we were so many miles apart, it seemed for a moment, that we were under the same roof. Time always passed so quickly when I talked to Max, before I knew it was two in the morning. Both of us were entering that stage in the night where everything is funny and sensational at the same time.

“Aww shoot I've gotta be in the studio at 6:30 tomorrow morning," Max craned his head up to look at his clock before promptly flopping back down when he saw it was 3:56 am.

"You should really go to bed, I don't want you falling asleep during your recording session. Although, that would be pretty funny. Besides I'm going out with Isabel and Ian for breakfast tomorrow so I should probably go to bed too."

"Ya, definitely,” he sat up suddenly and flipped his camera to face the window, "are you looking?" he asked.

I sat up to look out my window, "yes."

His finger appeared in front of the screen, pointing at the Big Dipper and the moon.

"Do you see those from your room?" He asked.

I looked out the window into the starry night sky. I made out the Big Dipper and my eyes glazed over to the moon.

"Yes."

We had a moment of silence where we both marveled at the stars.

Max broke the silence, "I miss you so much you know?"

"I miss you too.
